  • Vocal Coaching Clinics

Those of you attending before Christmas will be aware that Vivien carried out another series of individual coaching sessions last term. A number of people were unable to attend, plus many SOC members have returned this term, therefore I’ve been asked to schedule some more clinics .

These will take place over February only – so on 8th, 15th and 22nd February. So if you did not have a session with Vivien last term and are a SOC member (guest singers please disregard this message!) please note the following:

Please let me know if you will not be at rehearsal on one of these dates

If anyone wants to book their session during the break this Wednesday that would be helpful. (I sit with A2)

I will send the schedules out with notices via Carol

There is a possible option for small group sessions of 2 or 3 people – let me know asap if you would prefer this

    Many thanks

  • News from SOC Committee December 2022

Our Summer Concert in 2023 is set to be a showstopper. We join with Robert’s Chamber Choir and sing works with a distinct Jazz flavour including Will Todd’s Mass in Blue.

This concert is going to cost a bomb to put on and we need to raise £5000 to make it happen. Members will be encouraged to do some fundraising, sell tickets and publicise the concert.

Following on from our discussions on Singing in a Cold Climate the Committee has made overtures to other Sheffield choirs about singing together more. In Summer 2024 we will join with the Sheffield Bach Choir to perform Brahms A German Requiem with Elizabeth Watts as soloist. Sheffield Cathedral is not available so we are looking for another sizeable venue – suggestions welcome.

Our AGM is set for Wednesday 1st Feb 2023. There will be big changes in the Committee as both Bill and Janet are stepping down as Chair and Secretary. Please consider whether you could help with the running of SOC. We may need a couple of Voice Reps – always a good way to see how the choir works. Speak to any of the Committee, whose photos are on cards in the foyer.

2023 will see the launch of the SOC Patrons Scheme which will involve our regular audience more closely and bring in revenue. Patrons pay £50 annually or £100 for a Season ticket. We will be looking for a volunteer to run this scheme. More in the new year.

Finally remember that there are rehearsals on both the 14th and 15th December, the latter at 6pm.

    Outstanding music returns:

Many thanks to those of you who returned their music (via a variety of means!) last week. If you still have music from the last concert please could you return it on Wednesday. It’s due back at the library shortly and some of it is booked by another choir. If by any chance you can’t get it back please would you let me know (kathmilner@live.co.uk). Thanks.

  • Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir

    Dear singing friends,

One year more, I am delighted to announce our 24th Choral Day will take place on the 3rd of June 2023 at our usual venue: Central Methodist Church (Chesterfield). This year we will be doing Karl Jenkins' The Peace Markers. Karl Jenkins has been very popular in previous Choral Days and hence Steven has selected this wonderful work. This time you will have the option to pay by bank transfer or cheque. Attached are the registration forms with all the instructions. Hope they are self explanatory but please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. I have attached a pdf and word versions to enable you to complete them electronically and send them back to us should you prefer to use the e-mail option.

This year Angela Walker (Choir Secretary for the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir) will be helping with the registrations. Hence you may see some e-mails from her from this e-mail account responding to enquiries.

Please note the deadline for pre-registrations of the 31st of December (date we should have received your payment and registration form by). After that day registrations will go up from £16 to £20.

For those interested in practising beforehand, there are recordings of individual voice parts in Choraline.

Very much looking forward to seeing you all in June next year!!

    Best wishes,

Sadly I have to pass on the news from Laurence Coates that his wife Liz died last week after a long illness.

Laurence retired as a Tenor a couple of years ago, he had been a massive part of the administration of the Society for many years.

Funeral arrangements will be passed on when I have them.

Please sign the card of condolence next to the registers.

  • Subscriptions for 2022/23

I’ve already been asked about subscriptions so here’s the current information:

The rate is £150 per year or £50 per term or £12.50 per month by standing order. If you pay monthly please update your standing order from £11 to £12.50 per month if you’ve not already done that.

Payments of full or termly amounts can be made by cheque at rehearsals or online to our bank.

Sheffield Oratorio Chorus Sort Code: 54-41-47 Account No: 02037165.

At rehearsals you can give cheques or cash to either Helen Ledger (Alto) or myself. We have become the finance team, as those of you with long memories will remember from some years ago when you usually gave your subs and any other money to Helen. She is once again taking on the receipt of money and I’m paying the bills.

Helen is also organising the provision of Cake at rehearsals so you may find her around the cake area in the interval. She’s hoping not to have to be the baker too often so if you would like to volunteer to go on the rota she’ll be delighted to see you. Cake is 50p and the proceeds go into the funds as well as providing a pleasant interlude and extra energy for singing.
